Today's story features Demetrius and soccer camp. He was excited to go but very apprehensive once he got there. And subsequently started crying when it was time to take the field. He was immobile, hiding behind his hands, for a short while and then he got into the swing of things and started having fun. They took a water break and the same thing happened when they had to go back - twice. He rode with me on the way home and I said to him, "Demetrius, it looked like you were crying out there? Was everything OK? Or did you get hurt or something?" "No, Grandma. It's just that my eyes kept getting water in them. I didn't want anybody to see them so I put my hands over them. Then the water dried up and it was OK. I could see again." As smart as he is, I don't think he really associated the water getting in his eyes with crying. Or maybe he's so smart that that was his cover story!

One day, Demetrius was playing with a tired PawPaw. They were riding in Demetrius's "car" which happens to be the king sized bed in the spare room. I think Wil might have fallen asleep when I heard Demetrius saying, "C'mon Paw Paw. We're here. Don't daudle now. C'mon on. Don't daudle! Hurry up!" I called Demetrius back to the sewing room where I asked him what he had said and he repeated it. Then I asked him if he knew what "daudle" meant. He said, "yes, it means to hurry up and come with me - don't waste time." Being amazed as I don't think I knew the meaning of "daudle" until I was in my 30's, I asked him where he had heard that word. He told me "on pbs.org". When I told the story to Uncle Ben and Daddy Luke, neither of them knew what it meant until I told them. Who says TV isn't good for kids???
It was Wil's birthday celebration and we were all on the huge backporch, talking, eating watermelon and generally having a good time. Demetrius was having fun with his PawPaw and Uncle Ben. Paw Paw was blowing bubbles from the big jar we keep on the backporch for just such occasions. But he was getting hyperventilated so he told Demetrius he had to stop. D was riled up so he got Unca Ben to blow some bubbles until Ben started feeling lightheaded too. So we told Demetrius to blow some bubbles on the plants since soapsuds are really good for them. He asked, "which plants?". Someone said, "The ones with the green leaves." It took him all of a nanosecond to turn around and say, "Duuuhhhh!!!!!! They ALL have green leaves!" You can't fool this kid!
